  • Weight gain/loss

IBS is often associated with psychological & emotional issues including . . .

So what causes IBS?

The short answer is that the precise cause of IBS isn't known, though a number of factors are likely to be important.  One major factor appears to be a link with stress.  Situations such as family problems, work stress, or exams may trigger symptoms in some people.

There is no 'cure' for IBS

Unfortunately, research suggests that conventional medical approaches to the management of IBS may be unsatisfactory for more than half of patients. But the good news is that research and clinical experience also indicates that hypnosis can be beneficial!  And that's not just hype.  Hypnotherapy is now a recommended treatment option by The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the British Medical Association (BMA).  And, if you'd like some even better news, research also shows that Hypnotherapy is  an effective treatment even for patients who did not respond to standard medical treatment.

The effects of IBS hypnotherapy last!

Continuing the good news theme, prestigeous medical research also suggests that for most patients gut orientated hypnotherapy produced therapeutic gains that are maintained for years after treatment had been concluded.

Why does hypnotherapy work so well for IBS?

It helps in two main ways:

  • It can help sufferers to influence and gain control of their gut function.

  • It can help to re-programme the subconscious mind to deal positively with the situations, anxiety and stress responses that trigger and aggravate IBS.

How many sessions of hypnotherapy are necessary to treat IBS?

Being realistic,  a total of at three or least four sessions are likely to be necessary – depending on progress and how chronic the condition is.   The sessions are usually spread over a period of about two months. The first session would normally be expected to last about 1.5 hours.   Subsequent sessions would be about 1  hour in length.  Some benefit  is often experienced soon after the first session, and research evidence shows that up to 80% of clients may experience an improvement of up to 80% in symptom severity.
